Glucosamine may be a popular treatment for lower back pain, but new research finds it probably doesn't work.

A Norwegian study considered to be scientifically significant found those on the supplement for six months had no difference in pain.

And, in an editorial in the, Journal of the American Medical Association, researchers said based on the results it would be unwise to recommend glucosamine to those with lower back pain.

Results of past studies of the supplement for have been mixed, with some showing some benefit in certain patients with osteoarthritis of the knee.
