The White House says Army Staff Sergeant Robert Miller "displayed immeasurable courage and uncommon valor" when he was killed in a firefight on January 25, 2008.
Miller's actions saved his fellow soldiers as well as 15 members of the Afghanistan National Army.
At Wheaton North, Miller was captain of the gymnastics team, which went to state his senior year.
President Obama will present the medal to Miller's parents at the White House on October 6.
