Vote for Chicago's next Christmas tree ends

Out of 74 entries submitted to the Mayor's Office of Special Events, the three strong and silent finalists were all blue spruces:

  • a 70-footer from the John Colomer family in McHenry;
  • a 56-footer from Justin Smith family in Willowbrook;
  • and a 55-footer from the Don Spangler family in Western Springs.

    The voting deadline was Oct. 24. The tree will be illuminated at Daley Plaza, 50 W. Washington, on Nov. 24 at 5 p.m. by Mayor Daley, officially kicking off the holiday season in the Loop.

    Christkindlmarket in Daley Plaza

    From November 24- December 31, 2010, Chicago's Daley Plaza is transformed into the Christkindlmarket, an outdoor German market. Inspired by the famous Nuremburg Christmas market, it offers handmade gifts and food. Christkindlmarket, www.christkindlmarket.com, is open Sunday-Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Friday-Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

    Santa's House on Daley Plaza

    From November 24- December 31, 2010, Santa will hold a children's workshop at Daley Plaza with fun activities and safety tips. He'll also be available for photos:

  • Wednesday, November 24: 6 - 8 pm
  • Special hours on Thanksgiving Day, November 25: 11 am - 4 pm
  • Regular visiting hours and house tours begin on Friday, November 26 & continue every Friday, Saturday & Sunday through December 19 (Santa has a break from 3 - 4 pm only on these days): 11 am - 8 pm
  • Special Christmas week hours, December 20-24: 11 am - 4 pm
