A 43-day sit-in at Whittier Elementary School's field house is over after parents received a letter from Chicago Public Schools' CEO Ron Huberman. The parents want a library for Whittier students and don't want the field house torn down.

In the letter, Huberman agreed the century-old field house will not be torn down. It will be inspected, and the board will seek money for improvements. He suggested possibly putting a library inside Whittier.

Parents say the school is too small. They want the library inside the field house or as a standalone building. They will meet with Huberman Friday.
