William Borgstrom, 66, was the only one onboard his plane when it crashed Monday near a Schaumburg airport.

Police identified Borgstrom as the pilot on Tuesday.

His plane took off around 3:30 p.m. Monday from the airport and witnesses said it immediately drifted south and crashed nose-down along the runway.

Friends say Borgstrom was an experienced pilot who loved to fly his vintage plane. He was headed to Racine, Wis., to put the plane in storage for the winter.
