Students and staff at Des Plaines high school are forming a human chain Friday to pass thousands of donated food items from the school to a food pantry four blocks away.

Maine West High School organized the same effort last year during the holiday season. Food was packaged by the student council, and hundreds of members of the student body passed the food for a couple of miles to the Self-Help Closet and Pantry, an independent organization helping needy people.

The school's principal said last year more than 500 students participated.
