By the year 2020, more than half of Americans will have diabetes or be pre-diabetic.

And, according to a report from insurer United Health Group, it could cost our health system over $3 trillion.

The report focuses on the growing obesity epidemic as the leading cause of type-2 diabetes. This form often follows a progressive course staring with obesity then moving to pre-diabetes, where a person has higher than normal blood sugar levels.

Full blown type-2 diabetes can lead to complications including heart and kidney disease, nerve damage, blindness and circulation problems that can lead to amputations.
