Santa delivers gifts to families of fallen officers

December 18, 2010 (CHICAGO)

A motorcade took Santa and Mrs. Claus to Macy's on State Street where they picked up lots of brightly wrapped packages.

The gifts will be delivered over the weekend to the children of Chicago police officers who were killed or seriously injured in the line of duty. In all, 17 families will receive gifts. Among them are those of four officers who died this year.

Organizers say Operation Santa is an effort to let those families know they will never be forgotten.

"We have all kinds of toys, everything that they wanted. That's the whole point, to make sure that they're happy and that they have what they need for now," Santa Claus told ABC7 Chicago.

Santa stopped Saturday to deliver gifts to the children of police Sgt. Philip O'Reilly who died in a car crash while on patrol in 2003.
