Many taking antidepressants for no reason?

More than a quarter of Americans are said to be taking antidepressants but have never been diagnosed with any of the conditions that the drugs are typically used to treat, according to a study in the Journal of Clinical Psychology.

That means millions could be exposed to side effects from the medicines without proven health benefits, according to researchers.

Authors of the study say people could be approaching their physicians with concerns that may be related to depression and could include symptoms like trouble sleeping, poor mood, and difficulties in relationships.

These are problems that could go away with time or may require counseling instead.
