Local broadcaster McCarter dies at 81

Chicago-area broadcasting pioneer William McCarter has died.

McCarter went to WTTW in 1972 after former FCC Chairman and WTTA Chairman and Trustee Newton Minow recruited him.

McCarter led WTTW in Chicago for many years and developed several programs, including "Chicago Tonight", "Sneak Previews", "Wild Chicago" and "Soundstage."

McCarter retired in 1988.

McCarter was 81 years old. He is survived by his two daughters, a son and three grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
