Daley celebrates 69th birthday on farewell tour

April 23, 2011 (CHICAGO)

On Saturday, he was serenaded for his 69th birthday as he visited the new Greater Grand Crossing Branch Library. A cake with his picture was inscribed: "Happy Birthday Mayor Daley."

Then the mayor helped cut a ribbon to officially open the environmentally-friendly library. Later, he stressed how important being mayor for 22 years has been in his life.

"Sometimes being in charge is hard but you have to have a vision. You have to have a commitment and execution. Being a public official is being a public servant. You have to have passion. It can't just be a job from 9 to 5. You have to feel like this is part of your soul, this is part of your life," Daley said.

The mayor spoke before he joined in cutting a ribbon to open a new Cermak-Chinatown CTA el station on West Cermak.
