Same-sex civil unions start; so do divorces

On the same day that same-sex couples were lining up to get licenses for civil unions in Illinois, some were filing papers to end a relationship.

Illinois' new civil unions law went into effect on Wednesday. It gives couples that had previously married or entered into civil unions in other jurisdictions many of the same legal rights granted to married couples, including divorce.

A gay couple in Peoria that got married in Canada has already filed papers in Illinois to end their marriage. And Circuit Court Clerk Dorothy Brown says that on the first day alone 12 couples submitted papers for civil-union divorces in Cook County.
