More Indiana residents may soon be able to take a train into Chicago.

The Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District is considering a plan to extend the South Shore rail line eight miles from Hammond to Dyer.

The Northwest Indiana Times reports that seven trains per day would carry 4,500 passengers in Chicago each week.

Officials say the plan has strong support from mayors and town managers along the northern Route 41 corridor.
