3 addax antelope born at Brookfield Zoo

July 13, 2011 (BROOKFIELD, Ill.)

All three are females, born May 30, June 1 and July 9. They and their mothers -- Martha, Sara and Mali -- are well and on exhibit in their outdoor habitat at the zoo.

A fourth addax calf is expected by the end of the summer.

The addax additions are not only adorable, but they're also important to the expansion of the North American zoo population. The antelope is critically endangered in its native Africa.

Once prevalent in North Africa, the current wild addax population is estimated at 300 animals due, in part, to overhunting. They live in a narrow stretch of desert between Niger and Chad.

In 1941, Brookfield was home to the first addax birth at a North American zoo. Since then, there have been 140 births.
