Health officials say mosquitoes found recently in Evanston tested positive for the West Nile virus.

They were collected a week ago on July 18 and were the first to test positive so far this year.

West Nile virus is transmitted by mosquitoes that have fed on infected birds. It can cause mild symptoms in humans, but more serious illnesses such as encephalitis, meningitis and even death are possible.
