The truck hit the woman at about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at 39th and Shields. Police say he apparently failed to stop at the intersection and struck Joyce Thomas as she took her dog for a walk in her motorized wheelchair.
"That was my sweetheart, we went through a lot of things together... she didn't have to go like that," said Calhoun Offord, friend.
Offord said a witness told him the driver of the truck was on his phone at the time of the accident.
