Suburbs consider other options for water

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel's proposed water rate hikes have some suburbs considering shopping around for another supplier.

The Northwest Suburban Joint Action Water Agency, which provides water to several suburbs, including Hoffman Estates, Elk Grove Village and Schaumburg, discussed its options Monday.

Emanuel has proposed raising the price of water from $2.01 per 1,000 gallons used to nearly $4 per 1,000 gallons by the year 2015.

The price hike is meant to finance repairs to Chicago's pipes and sewer system.
