Man injured in carjacking at Loop hotel

October 26, 2011 (CHICAGO)

It happened at the Wit Hotel near ABC7's State Street Studio. The victim declined medical treatment at first but is now in the hospital.

Edwin Rodriguez said two men carjacked him just before 2 a.m. and then dragged him a full city block. He has several gashes on his face and three broken teeth.

He said he parked on Lake Street just east of State to pick up his brother, Eduardo, who works at the luxury hotel.

While he was waiting, he said two men walked up and told him his car had a flat tire.

Rodriguez said he got out to check, then one man jumped into the driver's seat and took off. Rodriguez says he held onto the car until Wabash and then let go. Meanwhile, the second man jumped into the passenger's seat as the car sped away.

Edwin Rodriguez said he hung on because he didn't want to lose his brother's car.

"I jumped into the passenger seat and tried to jump in, and he takes off while I'm still holding on to the door and seat," Edwin Rodriguez said. "I hit my head pretty bad and tried getting out but everything was spinning."

"I actually looked at him as he was getting in the car, and I looked at his face and saw a pretty deep look of fear in his face. He thought I was going to get in the car," Rodriguez said.

The car is a 2004 dark gray Infiniti G35. It is a four-door sedan with temporary tags. Right now, police are trying to track the car.

Rogriguez said the men did not seem to have a weapon.

"I'm glad he's OK. I'm glad there was no weapon involved, and as far as the car goes, I'd rather just let it go," Rodriguez's brother, Eduardo, said. "You know, hopefully they'll find the car but right now my main priority is my brother."
