Review questions wisdom of cutting down on salt

November 9, 2011

A new review is questioning the benefit of cutting down on salt. More than 160 studies were involved.

It found reducing salt in the diets of the general population may not have an overall positive health impact. Also, while cutting down on salt did reduce blood pressure in people who have normal or high blood pressure, it also caused increases* in some hormones and other compounds that can adversely affect people's heart health.

High blood pressure or hypertension is one of the leading causes of strokes, heart attacks and other cardiovascular diseases.

This study in the journal Hypertension and the Cochrane Library Journal is fueling debate, and no doubt there will be more research into the matter.
