A new study suggests women alcoholics may be three times more likely to suffer brain impairment than male alcoholics.

Swedish researchers found women alcoholics suffer a 50 percent reduction in the serotonin function in the brain after 4 years. Their male counterparts showed the same amount of damage after 12 years.

Serotonin is a chemical that controls moods, sleep and impulses.

The study is published in the Journal of Alcoholism.
