Chicago's City Council has banned the sale of products that mimic the effects of marijuana.

The ban of so-called synthetic marijuana was passed by aldermen Wednesday.

The ordinance takes effect next month. It does not make possession of the products illegal, but stores found selling them will face fines of up to $1,000 and their licenses could be revoked.
