Quinn to travel overseas to visit service members

December 19, 2011 (CHICAGO)

The governor will fly from Chicago to Landstuhl, Germany, to visit the American medical hospital.

Quinn will delivery holiday cards from Illinois schoolchildren and he will spend time with wounded soldiers as well as the service members who staff the hospital.

Among those is 20-year-old Lance Cpl. Kevin Martin who is a graduate of Proviso West High School in Hillside.

"I think it's an important mission that all of us have that we should look for ways as citizens to help those who have been on the frontline and have defended our democracy," Quinn said. "So this is a great tradition and it's important that all of us uphold it."

This is Governor Quinn's eighth visit to an overseas hospital dating back to his time as lieutenant governor. He says he is paying for the trip out of his own pocket.
