Former top school official Frank Gardner passed away Christmas morning, a Chicago-area funeral home reports.

Gardner was 88 years old. He was president of the Chicago school board from 1987 to 1989.

In 1988 Gardner was in the middle of a political battle involving then-mayor Eugene Sawyer. The mayor tried to replace Gardner but was rebuffed by the board which re-elected Gardner as president.
