New warnings ahead for cholesterol-lowering drugs

The government is adding some new warnings to the labels that will affect commonly used cholesterol-lowering drugs such as Lipitor, Zocor and Crestor.

The warnings will appear on the widely used drugs to indicate they may raise levels of blood sugar and could cause memory loss.

The FDA announced the changes today.

The agency adds the value of statins in preventing heart disease has been clearly established, but they need to be taken with care and knowledge of side effects.

But the FDA adds this new information should not scare people into stopping taking the drugs.
