It happened at 45th and Western just after 6:30 p.m. Several others were injured and taken to hospitals and the dead were ages 5 and 10 months.
Police say the driver of a white SUV clipped a vehicle a few blocks away then fled. In the process of fleeing, the driver hit a green vehicle, inside of which was a family.
"I saw the two cars collide," said witness Edgar Alaniz. "The lady from the green car came down and started screaming for help. Her baby was hurt. Her husband was severely hurt. The baby was bleeding from the side."
The scene remained active late Saturday and police were not able to confirm the number of people who were hurt or their conditions.
"Somebody was driving stupid and two kids died," witness Gale Rico said. "What you did to those kids ...How are you going...I hope you can sleep at night."
The drive of the SUV is in custody but no charges were filed.
