Many pregnant women still choose to smoke

A new study from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration finds rates of pregnant smoking vary widely depending on race.

It found almost 22 percent of pregnant white women ages 15-to-44 smoked cigarettes within the previous 30 days compared with just over 14 percent of pregnant black women and 6.5 percent of Hispanic women.

Scientists say pregnant women of different races and ethnicities may have diverse patterns of substance abuse and it's important to use these findings to develop better ways of getting this message out.
