Pregnant woman found dead in S. Side apartment

May 13, 2012 (CHICAGO)

The body of 28-year-old Lekiah White was found Saturday morning in the 6400 block of S. Maryland Ave.

No one knows who broke into the White's apartment and shot her death while her two children were home.

"What kind of person are you to take someone's mother," asked Daniah Thomas, White's sister. "That is the worst."

Thomas says the last time she spoke to White was Friday night by phone and by Saturday morning, Thomas received a phone call that her sister was dead.

"That was my best friend," Thomas said. "I wake up in the morning everyday and call my sister before I go sleep at night. She is the last person I talk to."

Police say White's door had been kicked in and her apartment was ransacked.

Neighbor Brionna Goodman says she didn't hear a thing.

"It's been hard and for me not to hear nothing is really bothering me," she said. "That I didn't hear the door being kicked in to wake, it's been devastating."

In front of White's apartment building, neighbors and friends memorialized her with a Mother's Day card and balloons. White's sisters say the best gift would be to find the person who murdered her.

"I just hope who can catch the person who did this," Thomas said. "I want justice."

Thomas says her sister was going to be 28 years old in a couple weeks. Yet, Thomas says, White seemed so much older. Thomas says her sister took care of everybody and knew how to handle tough situations like the one their family is going through today.

White was four months pregnant. Her children are eight and six years old.
