High Heel Dangers

May 29, 2012 (CHICAGO)

Dr. George Holmes from Midwest Orthopedics at Rush shows what heel lovers can do to be safer and more comfortable.

    Why high heels are dangerous:
  • Cause foot pain
  • Increase likelihood of sprains and fractures
  • Create foot deformities: hammertoes, bunions
  • Cause unsteady gait
  • Make you unable to run
  • Cause Achilles tendon problems

What women should look for in heels:
  • Nothing over 1" (problems start at 2-3")
  • Soft insole
  • Larger heel base
  • Platform at front of shoe which reduces incline of heel
  • Rounded toe box

Tips for women if they must wear high heels:
  • Choose the best time of day to wear heels
  • Don't lock into your size -- you may have to go up a size
  • Don't walk in heels -- carry them
  • Don't wear them every day -- alternate with cushioned, supportive shoes
