Dr. George Holmes from Midwest Orthopedics at Rush shows what heel lovers can do to be safer and more comfortable.
-
Why high heels are dangerous:
- Cause foot pain
- Increase likelihood of sprains and fractures
- Create foot deformities: hammertoes, bunions
- Cause unsteady gait
- Make you unable to run
- Cause Achilles tendon problems
- What women should look for in heels:
- Nothing over 1" (problems start at 2-3")
- Soft insole
- Larger heel base
- Platform at front of shoe which reduces incline of heel
- Rounded toe box
- Tips for women if they must wear high heels:
- Choose the best time of day to wear heels
- Don't lock into your size -- you may have to go up a size
- Don't walk in heels -- carry them
- Don't wear them every day -- alternate with cushioned, supportive shoes
