A study in the Journal of the American Medical Association looks at different diets: low fat, low carbohydrate and something called low glycemic, which aims to keep blood sugar levels stable.
The low glycemic diet is not as strict as low carbohydrate diet and centers on protein, whole grains, fruits and vegetables.
Participants burned more "resting calories," the kind you burn just sitting down, on the low carbohydrate or low glycemic diets.
The low carbohydrate diet burned the most overall calories but increased markers for stress and inflammation.
Authors are recommending the low glycemic diet for the calorie burning benefits without the potentially negative effects.
