Commonwealth Edison is warning customers to be on alert for scams.

People are pretending to be from utility companies and claim there are federal programs that will help pay electric bills.

ComEd says the scammer often ask for social security numbers and they also tell customers that they need to make an immediate payment or their service will be disconnected.

ComEd says scams often increase after major storms and other natural disasters.
