Authorities say Nacere Bradley of Chicago Heights was swimming with family members yesterday at West Beach in Porter County, Indiana.
Bradley went under the water for about three minutes.
Lifeguards managed to reach the child.
Bradley was pronounced dead at Comer Children's Hospital in Chicago.
