Crown Point soldier Sergio Perez laid to rest

July 27, 2012 (MERRILLVILLE, Ind.)

Police escorted the body of Specialist Sergio Perez to Our Lady of Consolation Church in Merrilville Friday morning.

The Patriot Guard later escorted the body to the cemetery.

The Crown Point native was killed earlier this month along with another Indiana National Guard soldier.

The young men were attacked by insurgents as they worked to clear supply lines.

The 21-year-old soldier died July 16 in the Kandahar province of Afghanistan after rocket-propelled grenades and small arms fire hit the vehicle he was in. Also killed was 20-year-old Spc. Nicholas Andrew Taylor of Berne. They were members of a bomb-clearing unit from the Valparaiso-based 713th Engineer Company.
