Derrick Smith could be booted from Ill. House

July 19, 2012 (CHICAGO)

If that happens, Derrick Smith would be the first one kicked out of the House in more than 100 years.

A two-thirds vote would be required to expel him. Smith was charged by federal prosecutors for accepting a bribe. In return, prosecutors allege Smith was going to steer a grant to a day-care center.

I n July, a special House committee voted 11-1 to expel Smith, but even if the House's two-thirds vote passes, Smith is still on the November ballot, and he could be in office next term if voters want him.

If he wins in November, the House could not vote to expel him again.
