Two other people were injured in the crash.
Police say the mother, identified as Marija Bala, 39, of Rogers Park, was driving north near Montrose when she lost control, crossed over a median into southbound traffic and hit two other cars. She did not survive.
Her 6-year-old son, Luka, was also killed
All southbound lanes were closed temporarily between Hollywood and Montrose while emergency crews responded.
One of the injured victims remains hospitalized. The other injured victim was treated and released. The crash remains under investigation.
