Chicago school board president David Vitale says an agreement between teachers and Chicago Public Schools officials won't come before Tuesday.

Thousands of CPS teachers walked off the job Monday morning after months of negotiations failed to resolve a contract dispute with CPS officials by the midnight deadline.

"We spent the day exchanging proposals and discussing them," said Vitale. "We really need to get this over with and get our kids back in school."

Vitale said both sides would examine the proposals Monday evening as talks continued.
