311 launching online follow-up system

Mayor Rahm Emanuel is launching a new 311 call system that allows residents to track the progress of city service requests and receive an email when the job is done.

Among the most requested 311 service calls are graffiti, potholes and burned out street lights.

The call center receives about 2 million service calls a year. Nearly 40 percent of those calls are duplicates or residents calling to check on the status of a request.

City officials say by allowing people to check service requests online, the city can reduce repeat calls.
