Thousands of interested buyers showed up Sunday in Dixon, Ill., for the federal auction of some of the assets belonging to Rita Crundwell, the town's indicted former comptroller.

The U.S. Marshals Service is conducting the auction.

Crundwell had amassed a high-end horse-breeding operation through what prosecutors say was felony theft of $53 million of Dixon's town treasury.

One of her horses was sold on Sunday for a bid of $775,000.

The auction continues Monday.

If Crundwell is convicted, proceeds will go toward restitution to the City of Dixon.
