Humira could be used to treat ulcerative colitis

September 28, 2012

Humira is a blockbuster rheumatoid arthritis drug that can now be used for adults with hard to treat ulcerative colitis.

The FDA just approved the use by adults to help control the chronic condition once other treatments have proved ineffective.

Ulcerative colitis is a chronic disease that causes inflammation and ulcers in the inner lining of the large intestine. It affects about 620,000 Americans.

The FDA says the approval provides an important new treatment option for patients who have had an inadequate response to conventional therapy.
