Gabby Douglas kicks off scholarship program in Gary, Ind.

Olympic Gold Medalist Gabby Douglas and her mother were in Gary, Ind. on Monday for a mother/daughter luncheon at the Barden Foundation.

The 16-year-old gymnast kicked off a scholarship program at the event on the Indiana University Northwest campus.

Douglas won gold twice- with the U.S. gymnastics team and again in the individual all-around women's artistic gymnastics. Douglas is the first African-American and woman of color to win the Olympic all-around event.

Her mother, Natalie Hawkins, is from Gary. She raised Douglas in Virginia Beach, Va.

Douglas, who started training regularly at 6, has been traveling the country inspiring girls.
