The 16-year-old gymnast kicked off a scholarship program at the event on the Indiana University Northwest campus.
Douglas won gold twice- with the U.S. gymnastics team and again in the individual all-around women's artistic gymnastics. Douglas is the first African-American and woman of color to win the Olympic all-around event.
Her mother, Natalie Hawkins, is from Gary. She raised Douglas in Virginia Beach, Va.
Douglas, who started training regularly at 6, has been traveling the country inspiring girls.
