Colds vs. allergies for kids

November 1, 2012

Runny noses and sneezing are common to both colds and allergies. But there are some distinct differences between the two.

Allergies can also cause itchy or watery eyes, itchy nose and itchy throat. Colds tend to be accompanied by fever.

Youngsters often complain about a sore throat with a cold. That's less common with allergies.

Colds tend to run their course within a week or two, whereas allergies can last much longer. If your child's symptoms have you concerned, check with your pediatrician.
