Jesse Jackson Jr. resigns; Letter handed into House Speaker

November 21, 2012 (CHICAGO)

Aides to Speaker Boehner confirm to ABC News that they have received the letter of resignation from Congressman Jackson.

Jackson, who has been on medical leave since June for bipolar disorder and depression, is under federal investigation for allegedly misusing campaign funds. He may be considering a deal in exchange for a plea in the federal case.

Federal authorities have probed campaign spending by Jackson on personal items, including interior decorating and a luxury watch that was purchased with campaign money for a female friend.
