Metra train collides with vehicle on Chicago's South Side

December 10, 2012 (CHICAGO)

Metra Electric train No. 334 struck a vehicle about 5:30 p.m. near East 71st Street and South Cornell Avenue, said Metra spokesman Michael Gillis.

Emergency personnel had to free at least one person trapped in the vehicle and paramedics took two people inside to a local hospital, according to Fire Media Affairs. The driver was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition and a passenger in good-to-fair condition.

The inbound train left the 93rd Street station about 5:20 p.m. and struck the car about a block from the Stony Island station, its next scheduled stop, Gillis said.

The accident caused delays on the Metra Electric Line and forced the cancellation of outbound train No. 341, according to Metra's website.

The CTA said it rerouted Stony Island Local (No. 28) and Stony Island Express (No. X28) in the area.
