San Francisco Police Chief Greg Suhr is not mincing words about the officer whose online video created the latest scandal for the department.
"Obviously, it's just beyond irresponsible and dumb," Suhr said.
The local blog SFist first found the video on Sgt. Carl T's Facebook page. T, who legally changed his last name from Tennenbaum, bragged about a drunken high speed joyride with friends in a Lamborghini through the Broadway Tunnel.
"100 Miles per hour in the Lambo," T posted, adding in the comments that "it's roomier than you think. Plus we were all drunk."
As of Thursday, T is no longer on duty at the North Beach Police Station and was transferred to a desk job at headquarters while an internal affairs investigation is underway. .
"If it plays out the way it certainly looks like it's going to, the discipline will be swift and severe," Suhr said. "It's going to be a very stiff suspension to be sure."
But T now appears to be backing away from his Facebook posts, telling SF Weekly, "There was no drunkenness," he says. "I've done some crazy stuff, but I'm not that stupid." T also says he was a passenger, not the driver.
Mayor Ed Lee believes whatever was going on was irresponsible.
"To the extent that the video has anybody, whether an officer or somebodyone, promoting or being proud of going 100 miles per hour in the Broadway Tunnel is absolutely dangerous and people should be held accountable," Lee said.
That tunnel, which runs from Larkin Street in Russian Hill to Powell Street in busy Chinatown has a posted speed limit of 35 miles per hour. It took an ABC7 News crew 40 seconds to get through. The car in the video took approximately 16 seconds.
"It is my district and that activity is incredibly dangerous, completely unacceptable," Supervisor David Chiu said.
T has not commented to ABC7 News on the story. Suhr says he has spoken with him and says he is embarrassed and contrite.
