The 56-year-old man suffered first and second-degree burns and smoke inhalation and was hospitalized in critical condition.
Earlier, a woman passing by had called for help and rang buzzers at the entrance to alert residents.
The apartment below the man's suffered water damage. The woman who lives there was displaced and was getting help from the American Red Cross.
