Chicago sinkhole swallows three cars

A Chicago sinkhole that swallowed three cars left a huge crater in the street at 96th and Houston on the city's South Side.

City officials say the contractors will determine the next steps on how to fix the hole it left behind -- and the broken main that touched it off.

"The water in that water main continued to run," Water Management Commissioner Thomas H. Powers said Thursday. "Washed out the street, washed out the soil, the pavement couldn't handle its own weight anymore."

The sinkhole caved in around 5:15 a.m. Thursday, swallowing three cars. One man also fell into the sinkhole, but he was rescued.

The three cars were removed from the sinkhole at 96th and Houston in the Jeffery Manor neighborhood on Thursday afternoon.
