One Chicago area service dog is up for a national hero award from the American Humane Association.

Gander is a two-and-a-half-year-old labradoodle who has become an ambassador for service dogs and an advocate for suicide prevention among wounded warriors.

Gander assists a Vietnam veteran in Vernon Hills every day.

Earlier this year, he rescued a girl from an attacking stray.

Gander was rescued from a shelter in Colorado.
