Mayor Rahm Emanuel has proposed a big increase in fines for traffic violations involving bicycles.

The proposal comes as the city is in the midst of a big expansion of bike lanes.

The current fine for cyclists who break traffic laws is $25.

That would increase to a maximum of $200.

And fines for motorists who open doors in the path of cyclists would double to $1,000.
