Neighbors battle bulldozers in Albany Park over sandbags

June 5, 2013 (CHICAGO)

Bulldozers tried to remove sandbags from the 5000-block of North Monticello, where flooding took place in April. But upset residents protested, saying they need the bags there to protect them from future flooding.

City workers said they were being removed because they're moldy and ineffective. Some residents say they're upset they weren't warned the bags would be removed.

"That's our security blanket for the rest of the summer. And summertime is coming. That's the time we get the heaviest rain. So we're very upset and angry about it," said Robert Fine.

City workers maintain that the bags will be removed eventually -- and their placement there is only a Band-Aid for the problem.
