Tuesday, the mayor and two CTA officials toured part of the project. The work started six weeks ago and has seventeen weeks to run.

The $425 million project is completely reconstructing the branch. The mayor says it will be a major boon to commuters.

"They now see a revitalized Red Line south, which inspires and helps stabilize communities, allows people to get to work quicker, and faster, and more reliable, but it also means, because of the traffic, there will be more retail opportunities," said Emanuel.

The reconstructed Red Line south is expected to reopen for business in October.
