Mayor Rahm Emanuel: Food deserts dwindling in Chicago neighborhoods

August 16, 2013 (CHICAGO)

The Mayor's office says the number of low-income people in these areas has declined 21 percent since 2011.

The city has made bringing grocery stores to neighborhoods a priority.

Mayor Emanuel convened a summit in 2011 to begin a strategy to eliminate food deserts.

At the summit, six grocery store chains committed to opening or rebuilding stores in areas of need.
